Kickboxing – Relieve Stress & Get Fit! – Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu & Kickboxing

Looking for a legitimate way to let off some steam with some punches and kicks? Kickboxing might be for you.    This combination of aerobics, martial arts, bodyweight training and boxing offers a fun way for you to relieve stress and get fit.  Kickboxing will also help you feel great with more energy, weight loss, toned muscles and boosted confidence.

Why Try Kickboxing?

Most of us have build up a tolerance to high levels of stress due to work, school, family or other personal issues that flood our lives.   Excess stress is correlated with a wide variety of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.  Not to mention that when we are stressed we usually have a negative attitude and are generally not very fun to be around.  Kickboxing helps us knock out the stress through a high-energy workout that encourages the flow of endorphins, reduces anxiety and provides us with great outlet for our frustrations no matter how big or small.

Punching the bags, kicking pads, and engaging your mind as well as your body will not only reduce your stress levels; but will also provide you with a great way to lose weight and improve your fitness.  Kickboxing is a full-body workout that will tone your legs, arms, core and improve your stamina and coordination.   Expect to feel more confident as you get stronger, learn self-defense and get in great shape.

Do you want to have a Black Belt? or Do you want to be a Black Belt?

I think it’s a fair question to ask considering most people want to have a black belt.  Whether they want it for social status, bragging rights or because they believe the belt itself will magically give them the skills of a black belt.  The faster a student realises the difference the faster they will start seeing amazing results with their training. Wanting to Have a black belt can lead to many problems during your martial arts journey.  However wanting to BE a black belt will keep you focused on what really matters such as improving yourself, and developing your skills at a level that will result in becoming a black belt.  Keep in mind that reaching a black belt is not the final destination of martial arts.  For most who achieve this it is the beginning of a new chapter in their own book of martial arts.

Benefits of Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is so much more than just a sport or form of self defense.  It’s a complete system for your life.

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was made popular by the legendary Gracie Family founding the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC.  Where they were able to defeat and submit often larger and stronger opponents.  Jiu-Jitsu has grown into more than just a sport or martial art,  it is a lifestyle to many people due to the amazing benefits that come along with training in the “Gentle Art”.

Many people relate the benefits of training to fighting, self defense or combat skills.  While it’s true that someone who trains Jiu-Jitsu is learning how to fight and defend themselves; but the benefits spill over into all other aspects of their lives from making new friends, improving their health and increasing their longevity.   Here are some more benefits of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu…

Weight Loss & Getting In Shape

After you begin training you will notice how easy it is to lose weight and keep it off by consistently training.  Jiu-Jitsu uses every muscle group in your body so you will notice a difference immediately.  Often times you don’t even realize that your getting such a great workout in because unlike running on a treadmill you are engaging your mind and focusing on your training partner, techniques, movements etc.  Instead of staring at a screen watching the blinking light go around.  Many of the sports top athletes first came to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training as a way to lose weight and then found their love for competition and made a career out of it.

Self Defense

The first time you step on the mat of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy you will immediately realize how little the average person knows about basic self defense and the ineffectiveness of our most natural instincts.   The Fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu are also the best foundation of Self Defense and Fighting.  Popular belief is that striking is the best defense against a violent attacker but in actual altercations,  punching is not nearly as effective as closing the distance and getting control over your opponent.   This is why most Law Enforcement and military personnel go through specialized programs developed through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because of the safety and effectiveness of the techniques.   Of course the best defense is to be aware, confident and knowledgeable which is what you gain as you continue your training.

Stress Relief

One thing you will notice during a Jiu-Jitsu class is that everyone leaves smiling.  That’s because Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent way to alleviate the stress from work and life.  Whatever is on your mind will be quickly forgotten when you start to roll.  The aggressive nature of Jiu-Jitsu allows us to let off steam in a controlled environment.  Mad at your boss? Problems at home? Being on the mat is often referred to as therapy – a place where the only thing that matters is learning a new technique and trying to apply it during sparring.  All of a sudden our problems aren’t so important anymore.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

The more you train Jiu-Jitsu, you mind will start to open as you better understand techniques and your own body.  Like most sports, technique and strategy are important for success.  Most students of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu compare rolling to a game of chess.  Although Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and very physical you can’t discount the mental aspect of training.  It’s your mind against another’s mind and each move you make determines an outcome  We develop our critical thinking and problem solving skills because of this.   What will your next move be?  How will your opponent react?  Those at a higher belt or skill level can think many moves ahead and the key is to build that mind-body connection.

Humility & Patience

Just as in life, you do not always win in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and sometimes classes can be very frustrating when we feel we are not improving.  We need this challenge as well to help us deal with the inevitable disappointments and setbacks in life.  Even though Jiu-Jitsu is an art that allows smaller students to win against larger, stronger opponents.  Sometimes things don’t go our way.  These situations teach us to address our ego and improve our ability to handle adversity, developing strength of our character and patience.  Training Jiu-Jitsu is not a direct path of the mountain of achieving your black belt.  It is a series of growth and plateaus.  During our plateaus we work on our humility and patience.  Without it,  success is not possible in life or Jiu-Jitsu.

JIU JITSU: THE PERFECT SPORT FOR KIDS

Jiu Jitsu: The Perfect Sport for Kids

Source: JIU JITSU BROTHERHOOD

Today there are more options than ever for parents when it comes to choosing a sport or an activity for their kids.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may not be the first choice for as it lacks the visibility of many of the more popular sports in today’s society. This is a shame as the the practice of grappling can be extremely rewarding physically, mentally and emotionally and has many benefits to offer the kids of today. As a result it is worth taking the time to consider what you want your child to learn from a particular sport

In this article I have outlined some of the main benefits that BJJ can offer to children.

FITNESS AND ATHLETICISM

BJJ is an extremely athletic sport that requires you to use nearly every part of your body. Through Jiu-Jitsu you will develop strength, flexibility, agility, and cardiovascular fitness. Developing these skills and attributes at an early age is important and will instill habits and an understanding of fitness that they will hopefully retain for the rest of their lives.

TEAM WORK

Many parents choose to enroll their kids in team sports as it is a chance for them to bond with their peers while also learning the value of teamwork. It may seem from the outside that Jiu-Jitsu is a solo sport but this could not be further from the truth.

When you join an academy you are joining a team. It is nearly impossible to practice Jiu-Jitsu alone and everything you do in Jiu-Jitsu will be alongside your team.

Not only will you will support you teammates when learning techniques, if you decide to compete in tournaments you will do so as part of a team. Nearly everything you do in Jiu-Jitsu will be done alongside a group of individuals that you will bond and grow with. BJJ academies are typically very social places.

SELF-DEFENSE

Hopefully no child will ever be placed in a situation where they will have to physically defend themselves. However it is impossible to protect them 24/7, so it is nice to know that they have the ability to protect themselves if necessary.

Jiu-Jitsu teaches you to control an opponent as opposed to physically hurting them which makes it the especially good for anti-bullying.

RESPECT

Respect is a core principle of every established martial art. In particular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches respect for your coach, respect for your teammates, respect for your competitors, and most importantly, respect for yourself.

In my opinion, this is one of the most important lessons for any child and the traditional nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect environment for a child to learn these important lessons.

CONFIDENCE

As a child’s ability on the mat grows, so does their confidence. In the kids program at my academy, we consistently see shy children slowly emerge from their shells as their confidence grows alongside their ability. Children that may have previously been unable to maintain eye contact begin to confidently into class, eager to engage with everyone around them.

COMPETITION

In today’s politically correct world, competition at kid’s level is often looked upon as something negative. However, competition helps kids learn that it is not always the best athletes who are successful, but rather those that work hard and stick with it.

BJJ competition is not compulsory but is an option for parents that would like to see their children compete. Kids BJJ Competitions are usually very well organized and run in a safe environment under strict rulesets.

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a clear and well defined progression structure for children. Just like adults, children are graded and awarded belts/tips based on the amount of time spent training in conjunction with their level of skill.

This system of progression teaches children that reward is gained through effort and an investment of time spent learning. As mentioned above, it is not about winning but about getting a little bit better every day. In this way BJJ encourages children to develop a growth mindset.

FUN!

Perhaps most importantly, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most fun things a child can do. Whether training in the Gi or Nogi, all it takes is a few classes for many people become addicted to the sport and spend every moment of spare time trying to improve their skills. What makes it really fun is that you get to do it alongside your friends. If you are lucky like me, the friends you make in Jiu-Jitsu will be friends for life. Unlike television, ipads and candy, this is a rare example of a ‘positive’ addiction that can help all areas of a child’s life.

If you have kids and want the best for them, then you owe it to them to at least give them the chance to try this amazingly beneficial activity.
