Confidence is one of the best gifts a parent can give to their child

“Confidence is one of the best gifts a parent can give to their child.”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent activity to help boost your kids confidence.  Confidence is essential for children as they grow and develop so give them a head start and enroll them in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Here are some ways Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can help your child become more confident.

Empowers them to stand up for themselves:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helps bully proof your child by teaching them non-violent self-defense so that they can stand up for themselves if a bully confronts them.  If they know they can defend themselves they will become more confident, which will show on and off the mats.

Teaches them that size and gender don’t matter:

Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent martial art for someone who is smaller than their opponent because it teaches attacks and defense from bottom positions, how to use leverage, gravity to get to a better position and where to apply pressure to control a position.  It is empowering to know that even if you are smaller you can win the fight.  It’s not uncommon to see girls competing against boys with much success as women’s Jiu-Jitsu is growing fast and girls tend to pick up Jiu-Jitsu really fast.  It shows children that no matter their size or gender if they work hard they will be successful.

Shows them that progress is more important than perfection:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will teach kids to appreciate their progress, and how to enjoy the journey without rushing to the destination. Everyone wants instant results but hardly anything works this way, and Jiu-Jitsu is no exception. It will teach kids that it takes consistency and perseverance to accomplish goals.

Equips them to embrace failure:

In Jiu-Jitsu winning and losing is part of the journey. Failure is a part of life as well, so it is important for kids to learn how to deal with it, and know how to learn from it, and come back motivated to do better instead of just giving up. They will begin to see losses as a way to progress and learn rather then the end of the road.

Hardens them both mentally and physically:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is challenging both mentally and physically, but this also makes it extremely rewarding. It will make your kids stronger from the inside out and teach them how to thrive outside of their comfort zone. This strength will accompany them into their everyday lives enabling them to be better equipped for the challenges life will inevitably throw at them.

5 Ways Jiu-Jitsu Will Transform Your Child

Martial Arts have long been seen as a great character building activity for children and while most people who think of martial arts often think of Karate or Taekwondo and the striking approach to martial arts, more and more parents are discovering that Jiu-Jitsu’s grappling and self-defense focus has amazing benefits to offer.  Plus it’s true that Jiu-Jitsu can arm children with much a much less violent approach to self-defense and bullying.  But that’s not the only benefits that kids will get from training Jiu-Jitsu.  Here are 5 ways Jiu-Jitsu will transform your child..

Overcoming adversity will build self-confidence

Jiu-Jitsu is difficult to learn.  There is no way around it.  It requires focus, patience and dedication and these are all great lessons for your child to learn early on.  With each challenge your child overcomes on the mat, they will develop a new sense of self-confidence that will help them overcome even greater challenges on and off the mat.

They will prove to themselves that even though it will be hard they know they can do it.  No activity will develop your child’s confidence more than Jiu-Jitsu.

Training will keep them active with a healthy mindset

The statistics are out there.  Children are becoming “digital addicts” and less active every year.  Obesity is in their future, if not the present.  Not with Jiu-Jitsu.  Getting your child involved in a martial art that demands physical fitness and builds it naturally through training, you are gifting your child new habits that will serve them throughout their lives.

More than just having a great physical effect on your child, Jiu-Jitsu also builds a healthy mindset.  Jiu-Jitsu promotes good citizenship, cooperation, positive thinking and a gentle, constructive, creative mindset.  Parents who enroll their kids in Jiu-Jitsu often remark on how much their child matures and becomes the best version of themselves.

Positive peers and social interactions

You try to teach your child good social skills and morals but, they will spend a huge part of their day away from you and your influence.   This can lead to attitude problems, disrespectful behavior and later on potentially dangerous situations that you’d rather them not be involved in.

By enrolling your child in Jiu-Jitsu, you can provide them with a positive peer group for of kids learning the same life skills and character lessons that they are.  Many of which who will become lifelong friends.

Develop a sense of hard work & self-discipline

“Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”  This has been a coaches mantra for years.  Jiu-Jitsu will teach your child to work harder to see improvements.  It will challenge them daily and in the process teach them to challenge themselves.

Parents often find that their kids start doing their homework without being asked, or helping out around the house.  In addition they become more respectful toward authority figures.

Learning techniques will build their sense of strategy and problem-solving skills

Jiu-Jitsu is extremely complex.  Many consider it “Human Chess”.  Every action on the mats has a counter to it.  Every action also sets up another more powerful action, if engaged correctly.

Both the technique and live training aspects of the class will teach your child to think under pressure, solve problems with their brain over their brawn and find the most effective path through any situation.

These skills transfer into other areas of their lives.

Why The Gamblers?

Why the name Gamblers?

We think it has become important for us to reach out to the community and explain who the Gamblers are and how we got here.

Our Founder Mike Ciprianni has had the Gambler name in his family since he was 10 years old.  His older cousins put together numerous teams to compete in Baseball, Softball and Football when they were kids.  Many local championships were won in these sports and everyone wanted to become a part of the Gamblers.

Growing up as a kid Mike Ciprianni could not wait until he was able to put together his own Gambler teams with his own friends and family.  When Mike was 15 he put together a softball team and a football team that also won their share of championships year after year.  The Gamblers name was then passed on to his younger cousins and then eventually Mike came to Florida and with the help of a good friend Duke Thrush started the Palm Beach Gardens Baseball team for his son Frankie and his friends.  They were number 1 in the country 2 years in a row all while playing the toughest teams in travel baseball.  They are still the most talent filled and most feared team in their age group every year.

Everyone should know and understand that these names are only used as a novelty.  It is no different than naming yourself “The Warriors”,  “The Crusaders”, “The Rebels” or “The Renegades”.  Everyone wants a cool name and The Gamblers is the name Mike lives and breathes because of its history in his family.

If anyone has actually taken the time to meet and get to know Mike Ciprianni, they would immediately know 2 things.  First is that he loves to give back and help kids.  He has sponsored as many as 8 teams at a time.  When we say sponsored that means paying for uniforms, tournaments and a great coaching staff.  Anyone that knows him knows he spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year helping these kids stay out of trouble and excel in sports.  Second, is that he loves his friends ands family and considers all of his friends as his family.  He treats everyone as an equal and loves having everyone around.

Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu & Kickboxing Club

Mike Ciprianni developed a strong passion for mixed martial arts after following the UFC around the country when it was only legal in a handful of states and cities.  Because of his passion for the martial arts he began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which in his opinion is the best foundation for fighting out of all other martial arts.   He was adamant about his son Frankie learning it as well.  He never let his son quit and it was a constant battle to keep Frankie interested in training and competing.  Today Frankie is a multiple time kids world champion, 2-time state champion and national champion.  He’s also won many local tournaments and trains every day.  Mike truly believes that the self-confidence his son gained through Jiu-Jitsu has helped him become a phenomenal athlete in other sports and also believes every person should learn Jiu-Jitsu as a form of Self-Defense.

What’s different about Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu is that we spend the money to fly current and former world champions to come teach our students Jiu-Jitsu and give them different techniques, concepts and philosophies on training.  We also are a non-political academy that believes in cross-training.  We understand if our students and competitors feel the need to cross-train and support it.  We are so confident in our curriculum, philosophies and culture of our academy that we have no fear of losing students to another school.  We are also confident that our students can hold their own in all areas whether it’s Self-Defense, Sport, MMA or training at another school.  Some academies aren’t confident in what they are teaching or in the level of their students that they forbid their students from cross-training.  They fear that their students will learn more somewhere else.

The Gamblers have become a family not an organization.  Mike believes in keeping the family together even outside of training, playing or practicing.   He feels it’s important to maintain this close bond and give back to students and parents and also let people know that he appreciates their loyalty.

Mike believes that in life you have to take on some risk which is essentially a “Gamble” if you want to succeed.  So the name Gamblers became a perfect fit for the message he wanted to convey.  He has always said “Success isn’t going to fall into your lap, you have to go out and take the chance to change your life.  Take that chance to learn new things.” Everyone knows that the first step is the hardest step.

Come take that chance and see who the Gamblers are and what the Gamblers Family is all about.  Whether it’s Jiu-Jitsu, Self-Defense or Kickboxing.  Any one of them will change your life for the better and help you become the best version of yourself.

Kickboxing – Relieve Stress & Get Fit! – Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu & Kickboxing

Looking for a legitimate way to let off some steam with some punches and kicks? Kickboxing might be for you.    This combination of aerobics, martial arts, bodyweight training and boxing offers a fun way for you to relieve stress and get fit.  Kickboxing will also help you feel great with more energy, weight loss, toned muscles and boosted confidence.

Why Try Kickboxing?

Most of us have build up a tolerance to high levels of stress due to work, school, family or other personal issues that flood our lives.   Excess stress is correlated with a wide variety of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.  Not to mention that when we are stressed we usually have a negative attitude and are generally not very fun to be around.  Kickboxing helps us knock out the stress through a high-energy workout that encourages the flow of endorphins, reduces anxiety and provides us with great outlet for our frustrations no matter how big or small.

Punching the bags, kicking pads, and engaging your mind as well as your body will not only reduce your stress levels; but will also provide you with a great way to lose weight and improve your fitness.  Kickboxing is a full-body workout that will tone your legs, arms, core and improve your stamina and coordination.   Expect to feel more confident as you get stronger, learn self-defense and get in great shape.

Do you want to have a Black Belt? or Do you want to be a Black Belt?

I think it’s a fair question to ask considering most people want to have a black belt.  Whether they want it for social status, bragging rights or because they believe the belt itself will magically give them the skills of a black belt.  The faster a student realises the difference the faster they will start seeing amazing results with their training. Wanting to Have a black belt can lead to many problems during your martial arts journey.  However wanting to BE a black belt will keep you focused on what really matters such as improving yourself, and developing your skills at a level that will result in becoming a black belt.  Keep in mind that reaching a black belt is not the final destination of martial arts.  For most who achieve this it is the beginning of a new chapter in their own book of martial arts.

Benefits of Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is so much more than just a sport or form of self defense.  It’s a complete system for your life.

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was made popular by the legendary Gracie Family founding the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC.  Where they were able to defeat and submit often larger and stronger opponents.  Jiu-Jitsu has grown into more than just a sport or martial art,  it is a lifestyle to many people due to the amazing benefits that come along with training in the “Gentle Art”.

Many people relate the benefits of training to fighting, self defense or combat skills.  While it’s true that someone who trains Jiu-Jitsu is learning how to fight and defend themselves; but the benefits spill over into all other aspects of their lives from making new friends, improving their health and increasing their longevity.   Here are some more benefits of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu…

Weight Loss & Getting In Shape

After you begin training you will notice how easy it is to lose weight and keep it off by consistently training.  Jiu-Jitsu uses every muscle group in your body so you will notice a difference immediately.  Often times you don’t even realize that your getting such a great workout in because unlike running on a treadmill you are engaging your mind and focusing on your training partner, techniques, movements etc.  Instead of staring at a screen watching the blinking light go around.  Many of the sports top athletes first came to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training as a way to lose weight and then found their love for competition and made a career out of it.

Self Defense

The first time you step on the mat of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy you will immediately realize how little the average person knows about basic self defense and the ineffectiveness of our most natural instincts.   The Fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu are also the best foundation of Self Defense and Fighting.  Popular belief is that striking is the best defense against a violent attacker but in actual altercations,  punching is not nearly as effective as closing the distance and getting control over your opponent.   This is why most Law Enforcement and military personnel go through specialized programs developed through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because of the safety and effectiveness of the techniques.   Of course the best defense is to be aware, confident and knowledgeable which is what you gain as you continue your training.

Stress Relief

One thing you will notice during a Jiu-Jitsu class is that everyone leaves smiling.  That’s because Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent way to alleviate the stress from work and life.  Whatever is on your mind will be quickly forgotten when you start to roll.  The aggressive nature of Jiu-Jitsu allows us to let off steam in a controlled environment.  Mad at your boss? Problems at home? Being on the mat is often referred to as therapy – a place where the only thing that matters is learning a new technique and trying to apply it during sparring.  All of a sudden our problems aren’t so important anymore.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

The more you train Jiu-Jitsu, you mind will start to open as you better understand techniques and your own body.  Like most sports, technique and strategy are important for success.  Most students of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu compare rolling to a game of chess.  Although Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and very physical you can’t discount the mental aspect of training.  It’s your mind against another’s mind and each move you make determines an outcome  We develop our critical thinking and problem solving skills because of this.   What will your next move be?  How will your opponent react?  Those at a higher belt or skill level can think many moves ahead and the key is to build that mind-body connection.

Humility & Patience

Just as in life, you do not always win in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and sometimes classes can be very frustrating when we feel we are not improving.  We need this challenge as well to help us deal with the inevitable disappointments and setbacks in life.  Even though Jiu-Jitsu is an art that allows smaller students to win against larger, stronger opponents.  Sometimes things don’t go our way.  These situations teach us to address our ego and improve our ability to handle adversity, developing strength of our character and patience.  Training Jiu-Jitsu is not a direct path of the mountain of achieving your black belt.  It is a series of growth and plateaus.  During our plateaus we work on our humility and patience.  Without it,  success is not possible in life or Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu Jitsu: The Perfect Sport for Kids

Today there are more options than ever for parents when it comes to choosing a sport or an activity for their kids.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may not be the first choice for as it lacks the visibility of many of the more popular sports in today’s society. This is a shame as the the practice of grappling can be extremely rewarding physically, mentally and emotionally and has many benefits to offer the kids of today. As a result it is worth taking the time to consider what you want your child to learn from a particular sport

In this article I have outlined some of the main benefits that BJJ can offer to children.

BJJ is an extremely athletic sport that requires you to use nearly every part of your body. Through Jiu-Jitsu you will develop strength, flexibility, agility, and cardiovascular fitness. Developing these skills and attributes at an early age is important and will instill habits and an understanding of fitness that they will hopefully retain for the rest of their lives.

Many parents choose to enroll their kids in team sports as it is a chance for them to bond with their peers while also learning the value of teamwork. It may seem from the outside that Jiu-Jitsu is a solo sport but this could not be further from the truth.

When you join an academy you are joining a team. It is nearly impossible to practice Jiu-Jitsu alone and everything you do in Jiu-Jitsu will be alongside your team.

Not only will you will support you teammates when learning techniques, if you decide to compete in tournaments you will do so as part of a team. Nearly everything you do in Jiu-Jitsu will be done alongside a group of individuals that you will bond and grow with. BJJ academies are typically very social places.

Hopefully no child will ever be placed in a situation where they will have to physically defend themselves. However it is impossible to protect them 24/7, so it is nice to know that they have the ability to protect themselves if necessary.

Jiu-Jitsu teaches you to control an opponent as opposed to physically hurting them which makes it the especially good for anti-bullying.

Respect is a core principle of every established martial art. In particular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches respect for your coach, respect for your teammates, respect for your competitors, and most importantly, respect for yourself.

In my opinion, this is one of the most important lessons for any child and the traditional nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect environment for a child to learn these important lessons.

As a child’s ability on the mat grows, so does their confidence. In the kids program at my academy, we consistently see shy children slowly emerge from their shells as their confidence grows alongside their ability. Children that may have previously been unable to maintain eye contact begin to confidently into class, eager to engage with everyone around them.

In today’s politically correct world, competition at kid’s level is often looked upon as something negative. However, competition helps kids learn that it is not always the best athletes who are successful, but rather those that work hard and stick with it.

BJJ competition is not compulsory but is an option for parents that would like to see their children compete. Kids BJJ Competitions are usually very well organized and run in a safe environment under strict rulesets.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a clear and well defined progression structure for children. Just like adults, children are graded and awarded belts/tips based on the amount of time spent training in conjunction with their level of skill.

This system of progression teaches children that reward is gained through effort and an investment of time spent learning. As mentioned above, it is not about winning but about getting a little bit better every day. In this way BJJ encourages children to develop a growth mindset.

Perhaps most importantly, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most fun things a child can do. Whether training in the Gi or Nogi, all it takes is a few classes for many people become addicted to the sport and spend every moment of spare time trying to improve their skills. What makes it really fun is that you get to do it alongside your friends. If you are lucky like me, the friends you make in Jiu-Jitsu will be friends for life. Unlike television, ipads and candy, this is a rare example of a ‘positive’ addiction that can help all areas of a child’s life.

If you have kids and want the best for them, then you owe it to them to at least give them the chance to try this amazingly beneficial activity.
